Fruit Machines
The fruit machine and football betting are two of the most deep rooted cultural practices in British culture. From the beginning, fruit machines caught the public's attention and grew and developed into what you find down at your local amusement arcade today. It's true to say that fruit machines developed from the popular concept of the American slot machine in the 1900's.
It's well acknowledged that Charles Fey, working in San Francisco, designed and built the first slot machine in 1887. It had a total of five symbols: horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a Liberty Bell, which is the name it soon became known by. The development of his machine replaced ten cards with five symbols, and using the three reels instead of five meant the complexity of reading a win was considerably reduced. This allowed Fey to devise an effective payout mechanism with three bells in a row producing the biggest payout of 10 nickels.
The popularity of the mechanical device soon began to soar, and various companies tried to buy the manufacturing rights. However, Fey refused to sell, and as a result manufacturer Herbert Mills from Chicago produced a replica of Fey's machine called the "Bell" in 1907, which he went on to produce on a mass scale. This resulted in most barber shops, bowling alleys, brothels and saloons installing the machines, which became a big money spinner for the owners.
In the early stages of fruit machine development, there was tight regulation, and monetary payouts weren't common. Instead, the player would put money in and when they won they would receive prizes like cigarettes and drinks. Another early machine gave out winnings in the form of fruit-flavoured chewing gum, and it was this machine that gave rise to the popular cherry and melon symbols.
Almost from the time of its interception, there has been some sort of regulation attached to these games. It was not till the mid 1960's that the British law makers deemed that in order for there to be a prize or payout, the player must use an element of skill for the game to be legal. So in the UK, as long as the game required a small amount of skill, it was legal and the fruit machine with its unique features was born.
By using these features, a player can increase the odds of making a combination and therefore winning money. The nudge and hold buttons on fruit machines allow the player to move the reels slightly or nudge one of the reels to make a winning combination to collect the prize. Many of the new games found online have fun bonus rounds that give you the opportunity to double your winnings or win a large number of free spins that increase the chance of winning.
The emergence of online slots and fruit machines saw a revolution in gaming, with many of the older land-based games being revamped and many new games being created to try and keep players interested. This revolution was marked by the Free Trade and Processing Act passed by Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean in 1994 that allowed companies around the world to open internet casinos legally. The first Internet casino Gaming Club was open in 1995, followed by Intercasino in 1996, with all the software being produced by Microgaming, which is still one of the biggest software providers of online fruit machines today.
The complexity of the machines themselves has increased, with the graphics and game play options coming on in leaps and bounds since 1995, with hundreds of different types of games being developed by a number of different providers. All these new features make the gaming experience far more pleasurable for the player, but the principles still remain the same, with winning coming as a result of chance and not skill.
Unlike typical land-based fruit machines that need microprocessors and moving parts, online gaming machines require no moving parts, so instead a graphical representation of one appears on the screen. It also means the machine's possibilities can be vastly expanded by adding more reels and symbols. There are so many possible combinations the manufacturers do not need to weight the payout symbols, so high payout symbols will appear less on the reels, with lower value symbols appearing more and the player earning a more frequent payout. These types of machines tend to encourage the player to play multiple lines, so unlike the original machines where you need to form a line across the centre of the machine, the new games can have up to 50 paylines. This increases the chance of getting a payout as a player. However, the size of your bet increases as you bet on more lines, so you're risking more each spin.
It's also important to note that the payout percentage is pre-programmed in the game before you start, so as a player you need to find this percentage out before you choose your machine. The payout is the amount of money the fruit machine pays as the total number of credits wagered by the players, and is always expressed as a percentage. It's widely acknowledged that online machines payout is higher than their land-based equivalents, with it typically ranging from 82% to 98%. Players should always play the machines with the highest payout |
